A plot outside Totnes with outline permission changed hands this spring for 185,000 pounds. The couple who bought it needed a self-build mortgage, a warranty provider willing to cover a timber frame, and a builder in the South Hams with a gap in the diary before 2027. Finding all three was harder than finding the plot.

Build For Devon reports on the money side of building and renovating in Devon and the wider South West. That means self-build mortgages and how stage payments actually arrive, bridging and development finance for people doing their first two or three units, the Right to Build registers kept by Teignbridge, East Devon, Torridge and the other districts, and what a square metre really costs to build in Exeter compared with Barnstaple or Plymouth.

Every article is rooted in a named place and, where possible, a real project. If a paragraph could just as easily be about Surrey, it does not go in.

The site is edited by Hannah Reeve, who has spent most of her working life around construction sites and planning offices in the South West and now writes about how projects are financed rather than how they are built. Build For Devon is an independent UK publication and does not arrange finance or take commission from anyone who does.
